When Richard Bandler and John Grinder developed NLP, at its centre was Modelling. It’s a skill we are born with, it’s our survival skill, part of our reptilian brain which ensures that we are fed and not abandoned by our primary carer. From being a baby, children watch their parents and older siblings, picking up how to stand, walk, say words, know how to be a little human. They repeat actions until they get them right and they persist because they can observe the model of how it is possible. When they go to school there are many more models of excellence they can copy and learn from. We are told not to compare ourselves with others but children do this naturally and this is all part of the learning process. What we should really be showing children is how to watch others and learn to do it themselves rather than watch and tell themselves that this person is somehow better than them. They are not, they have simply mastered something we need to learn.
